Interesting facts
g If the overlapping birth dates of children from different wives seem confusing, that's because John most likley was a polygamist. Polygamy was practiced in Monroe County, Pa., during the 18th century, though this fact often is only quickly mentioned by red-faced local historians.
g Family tradition states that the Place family was among the French Protestants criven out of their country by fanatical Catholics of the time. The Place family was among those who were succored by Count Jean Pintard and Countess Marie Celeste Pintard to reach England and then America, where they joined the infant Hugenot French Colony at New Rochelle, N.Y., and from there traveled to other colonies. Among those colonies was one in Tioga County, Pa., where they purchased 200 acres of wild land on which they built a substantial log house; the log house's chimney still stood in the mid-20th century. While the Tioga element of the story appears authentic, the earlier Huegonot history is not precisely bore out in the historical record.
Died
March 26, 1812, at age 86, in Middle Smithfield, Monroe, Pa.
